Lecture 16 : Goal for Personalised Medicine

4.23.9.2. Intellectual Property Rights and Personalized Medicine

4.23.9.3. State of Adoption of Personalized Medicine

The implementation of personalized medicine requires a support/influence of several sectors as is represented in the diagram below. Concentric circles and range represent stages of implementation for each sector from public or stakeholder recognition of the value of personalized medicine, the establishment of supporting policies and laws, the launch and execution of smaller scale pilot programs and projects, to the final stage of full implementation and widespread use. Full implementation of personalized medicine can only be achieved when all sectors converge toward the center. Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D – Mass.) Remarked by stating “…We are in a new era of the life sciences, and the truth of that statement can be seen in fields from medical imaging, to new biologic drugs, and even to the use of DNA technology to improve our environment and reduce greenhouse gasses. But in no area of research is the promise greater than in the field of personalized medicine.”----Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D – Mass.) Remarks on the Senate’s Consideration of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. April 24, 2008.
