    Title: Mechanical Design Simulation Practice

Course Objectives:

To make acquainted the students using computer aided engineering tools to design and analyse the structural, fluid flowand heat transfer related systems.

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, a student will be able to:
  • Create 1D, 2D and 3D Finite Element Models of mechanical systems.
  • Understand the solution techniques available in computer aided engineering tools.
  • Evaluate the design of mechanical systems by conducting stress analysis, thermal analysis or fluid flowanalysis.
List of Experiments/Exercises: I. Static Structural Analysis - Creation of Finite Element Models and Evaluation of Displacements, Stresses and Reaction Forces of
  • axially loaded members – using bar and truss elements
  • transversely loaded members – using beam elements
  • combined axial and transverse loaded members – using frame elements
  • thin plates or discs – using four or eight node quadrilateral elements (plane stress)
  • long pipes or dams – using four or eight node quadrilateral elements (plane strain)
  • brackets – using four or ten node tetrahedrons or eight or twenty node hexahedron elements
II. Dynamic Structural Analysis - Evaluation of natural frequencies and mode shapes of
  • axially and transversely loaded members

    Title: Chemistry: Synthetic and purification techniques in Chemistry

Course Objectives:

The workshop is designed to provide training to various experimental techniques for the 1st year/2nd year college level students of chemistry. The workshop will focus on various synthetic techniques in organic and inorganic chemistry, purification and spectroscopy. There will also be a component in computational chemistry with a hands on workshop. The workshop will comprise of lectures, lab sessions and a follow-up discussions

Subhajit Bandyopadhyay

Subhajit Bandyopadhyay did his MSc from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. He completed his doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Reginald Mitchell at University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. This was followed by a postdoctoral position with Professor Ron Breslow at Columbia University in the city of New York followed by a stint at Cambridge University, UK with Prof. Florian Hollfelder before joining IISER Kolkata. He is currently a Professor at IISER Kokata.

Sayam Sen Gupta

Sayam Sen Gupta did his MSc from IIT Kanpur and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, USA. This was followed by a postdoctoral position at the Scripps Research Institute (with Professor M. G. Finn). Then he moved to Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Technical University Munich, Germany with Prof Dr Thomas Schiebel. Before joining IISER Kolkata as an Associate Professor, he was a scientist at NCL Pune.

    Title: A glimpse of undergraduate physics experiments

Course Objectives:

The workshop aims to help students to develop general experimental skills such as taking and recording data accurately, analyzing and presenting data through use of tables, chart and graphs, etc. Concepts of error analysis, precision and accuracy of data, significant digit etc. will be discussed. Students will perform simple but interesting experiments to verify some basic concepts of physics. The workshop will comprise of lectures, lab sessions and a follow-up discussion.

Course outcomes:

The workshop is expected to help the students to develop critical thinking skills such as being able to make reasonable predictions and hypotheses from known facts, being able to see the relationship between experiments and equations and seeing how they apply to the real world.

Bipul Pal

Bipul Pal did his BSc (H) and MSc in Physics from University of Kalyani, WB and PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. He moved to Japan as an INOUE Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Tsukuba, and later as a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Tsukuba. He was awarded the INSA Young Scientist Award from Indian National Science Academy (2009) and he was an Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2009-20011). He is currently a Professor at IISER Kolkata. He has participated in numerous science outreach program and training program for college students and teachers. He has taken part in many resource generation camps for national and international Physics Olympiads. He was a member of the academic assessment group in International Physics Olympiad 2015.

Ananda Dasgupta

Ananda Dasgupta did his PhD in Physics from Jadavpur University. He was a Lecturer at the St. Xavier's College and later a Senior Lecturer, Jadavpur University. He has been associated with IISER K since its inception. He is currently an Associate Professor at IISER Kolkata and has been the Dean of Academic Affairs of the Institute. He is an outstanding teacher who has taught Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science at IISER Kolkata. He has participated in numerous science outreach program and training program for college students and teachers. He has taken part in many resource generation camps for national and international Physics Olympiads. He was a member of the academic assessment group in International Physics Olympiad 2015.

    Title: Biology: Advanced Biology Lab

Course Objectives:

We have designed a five-day advance biology training to give a flavor of different aspects of life science research. The workshop is designed in five modules and each module will look into the biological system from organismal level to molecular level.

Mohit Prasad

Mohit Prasad has a PhD in Developmental Biology from CCMB (JNU) Hyderabad. This was followed by a postdoctoral position at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. He came back to India with the prestigious Ramalingaswami Fellowship from Dept of Biotechnology. He is currently the Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at IISER Kolkata.

Rahul Das

Rahul Das has studied M.Sc. in Biochemistry at Calcutta University and M.Tech. in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He did his Ph.D. at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley before joining IISER Kolkata as an Assistant Professor.

    Title: Chemistry Lab Workshop :Techniques in organic chemistry

Experiments:

This workshop will focus on important techniques in organic chemistry, including extraction, purification, separation and synthesis techniques. Some key experiments involve fluorescein syntheis, luminol synthesis, diazotization and purification, caffeine extraction etc.

Trainer Profile:

Neeraja Dashaputre completed her undergraduate studies in chemical technology from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. After which, she obtained a doctoral degree in organic chemistry at University of Maryland, USA. She worked as a faculty at Claremont University post her doctoral studies. She joined IISER Pune in July 2016 and is currently Assistant Professor. Her research interests are in pedagogy development for teaching chemistry. She has over five years of teaching experience in India, and USA.

Harinath Chakrapani completed his undergraduate and post-graduate studies in Chemistry from Loyola College and Indian Institute of Technology Madras, respectively. He moved to Duke University, USA to pursue his doctoral studies and after post-doctoral research stints at Wake Forest University and the National Cancer Institute, USA, he joined IISER Pune in July 2009 and is currently Associate Professor. His research interests are in organic chemistry and chemical biology. His laboratory works on developing new tools to study effects of oxidative stress responses in cells and antibiotic resistance. He has over eight years of teaching experience at IISER Pune.

    Title: Chemistry Lab Workshop: Workshop in theoretical chemistry

Duration: 6 Days
Intended audience:

M.Sc. (year 1, 2)

Experiments:

In this workshop we will demonstrate the usefulness of some softwares to interpret the experimental observations. The workshop will encourage participants to use computational methods to understand the process in more detail. We will discuss our research experience with molecular modeling and show you that some modeling are easy to understand. In a unique fashion, the participants will explore a problem experimentally followed by its theoretical method, to gain a wider perspective of the two fields.

Reman Kumar Singh did his B. Sc from Banaras Hindu University,Varansi in 2010. Then after M.Sc. in Chemistry from the same university. He then joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune as a Ph.D. student in chemical sciences. He completed his Ph.D. from chemistry department of IISER Pune in 2018 under the supervision of Professor. Arnab Mukherjee. He then joined Dr. Amrita Hazara, IISER Pune, as a senior research fellow. He has worked on the computational biophysics area such as stability of protein in different environment, Protein-DNA interrelation, etc.He has over seven years of research experience at IISER Pune.

Subrahmanyam Sappati was born in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. He did his schooling at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Vennelavalasa, Srikakulam. He studied his B. Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) (2006-2009) course at Andhra University, India. Subsequently, he obtained an M. Sc. in Chemistry (2009-2011) from University of Hyderabad (UoH), India. Then one-year project assistant at ACRHEM, UoH, under the supervision of Prof. Susanta Mahapatra and Prof. M. Durga Prasad. He did his Ph. D (August 2012 - May 2019) at the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, India under the supervision of Dr. Prasenjit Ghosh in the area of computational chemistry. He was a short term visitor of The International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy (2014, 2017, 2018) for his collaborative works under the supervision of Dr. Ralph Gebauer and Dr. Ali Hassanali. Since , March 2019, he has been working as Research Associate at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India under the guidance of Dr. R. S. Swathi.

    Title: Chemistry Lab Workshop: Techniques in organic chemistry (Advanced)

Duration: 6 Days
Intended audience:

Students enrolled in 3rd year B.Sc. chemistry, 1st year M.Sc

Experiments:

Participants will be engaged in multistep synthesis to synthesize a compound. They will purify it using different purification techniques and characterize it using different spectroscopic techniques. This workshop will focus on advanced synthesis and characterization techniques including UV Visible, IR, NMR spectroscopy.
