Course Name: Rocket Propulsion

Course abstract

The fundamental aspects of rockets and the current trends in rocket propulsion are dealt with in this course. Starting with description of motion in space, the requirements of rockets for placing space-crafts in different orbits and escaping the gravitational fields of the planets are examined. The operating principles and design aspects of solid propellant, liquid propellant, electrical, nuclear and other types of rockets are dealt with.

Prof. V. Nagabhushana Rao

Dr Nagabhushana Rao Vadlamani received his PhD in Engineering from the Whittle Laboratory, University of Cambridge in 2014. Subsequently, he was awarded Bowring research fellowship by St. Catharine's college, Cambridge to pursue his independent research. He continued working as a Senior Research associate in the Cambridge University Engineering Department on Rolls-Royce and TSB funded projects. Prior to his PhD, Rao worked with the Digital Mockup team in Airbus India on the safe installation of various aircraft systems. He pursued his master's degree in Thermal engineering from IIT Madras and his Bachelors degree from NIT Warangal in Mechanical Engineering. Rao's research involves developing reliable numerical tools to build efficient components for the modern aircraft engines. In 2013, he and his colleagues were the recipients of the ASME IGTI Turbomachinery Committee Best Paper Award for their work on transition in low pressure turbines.
