Course abstract

This is an introductory orientation to help enrollees understand the notions of Design Thinking and People Centered Design and how a PCD approach is different from traditional engineering or marketing focused approaches. Today DT and PCD are being rapidly adopted and have achieved center stage by various industries. Students from any stream as well as professionals from various industries and levels of experience can learn these simple methods, concepts and tools. In order to master the topic however, they must actually execute a project to apply the teachings, which is not a part of this course. Prof. Jhumkee Iyengar

Jhumkee has over 25 years of experience in the US and India, having held technical and leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies, been an independent consultant, entrepreneur, researcher and writer and has also been a teacher and mentor both in industry and academia. Her strengths are the strategic assessment and implementation of human centered initiatives in various industry segments. As Principal Consultant at User In Design, she has been guiding design and research strategy, advising the establishment of user centered design services and providing user experience consulting to IT service companies, engineering/manufacturing organizations, organizations initiating user experience services for the Indian market from small startups to large MNCs and also those with interest in projects for the emerging market. She set up the User Experience practice at Persistent Systems where she also initiated and led ‘usability in e- Governance’, a community initiative for the Pune city government which realized four major projects. Jhumkee brings the unique balance of perspectives between India and the west, analysis and creative design, research and practice and industry and academia. She has many thought-leading research papers, articles, considerable press coverage and three awards to her credit. Jhumkee is a speaker at national and international forums. She has taught for leading Human Centered Design organizations and is a certified instructor for Pittsburgh, USA based LUMA Institute, teaching Human Centered Design to corporate leaders. She conceptualized, created and taught a course on User Experience Design at the MIT Institute of Design Pune and at the National Institute of Design, Bangalore. She is an Adjunct Faculty at IIT Kanpur, having successfully taught a project-based course on People Centered Design and Innovation to postgraduate Design and Management students over
