Course Name: Fundamentals of Particle and Fluid Solid Processing

Course abstract

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with various industrial operations involving particulate solids and its handling in various unit operations, where fluid-particle interactions are of paramount importance. This course will describe and explain the fundamentals of fluid-particle mechanics, which are essential for the understandings of numerous industrial fluid-solid processes like packed bed operation, fluidization, sedimentation, filtration, separation of solids from fluids, etc. Along with the fundamentals, industrial applications will also be discussed. Even though this course is primarily intended for the UG students of chemical engineering, the course content can certainly form the foundation of courses related to particle technology for UG students of other disciplines including mechanical, civil, pharmaceutical, metallurgy and minerals engineering.

Prof.Arnab Atta

Dr. Arnab Atta is presently an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. Awarded with a DAAD fellowship, he spent two months at TU-Dresden, Germany as a visiting faculty in 2015. Prior to joining IIT Kharagpur, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Alberta, Canada. After receiving his bachelor and master of Chemical Engineering degrees from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, he accomplished his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi, New Delhi as a National Doctoral Fellow. During his Ph.D., he was granted with Canadian Commonwealth Fellowship to visit and pursue a collaborative research in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Laval University, Quebec, Canada. His research interests are inclined toward developing CFD models for a range of applications in multiphase flow and systems at different length scales. He also actively works on droplet based microfluidic flows.
