Course abstract

This course is designed to address Historic Preservation and Conservation as an approach that establishes a link between past, present and future. To familiarize the students with the status of conservation movement,various agencies involved in the field of conservation worldwide and their policies.Introduction to International framework of conservation, definitions and concepts.Various guidelines for the preservation, conservation and restoration of building, and anoverview of current status of conservation and preservation in India are elaborated. Students are informed about the character and issues in our heritage towns, challenges of establishing the significanceand the process of impact assessment through case studies, Concept of integrating development and heritage preservation, about opportunities and community participation are highlighted along with exposure to management and presentation of heritage buildings and sites.

Prof. Sanghamitra Basu

Sanghamitra Basu, Ph D , MA ( Conservation Studies , IAAS , York. UK), Post Graduate ( Urban Planning , School of Planning and Architecture , New Delhi), B Arch ( Hons. ) , is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture & Regional Planning, Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) , Kharagpur, India . She has 33 years experience in teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels. She has been active in research and consultancy projects in the field of historic preservation, sustainable tourism, heritage management , participatory planning , housing and neighbourhood planning, GIS application and architectural pedagogy. She has several publications in journals, chapters in books, monograph and papers presented in international and national conferences. She has guided Ph D works in postmodern and traditional architecture and at present has several scholars working under her supervision in the fields of cultural heritage, tourism planning, neighbourhood and social cohesion, improving quality of life of senior citizens etc. . She served as a Member of an apex body, the National Monuments Authority, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She is a member of editorial / review boards of several peer reviewed journals and also a member of the Scientific Committee , and National Advisory Committee , ICOMOS General Assembly & Scientific Symposium 2017, India .
