Course Name: Complex Network : Theory and Application

Course abstract

Study of the models and behaviors of networked systems. Empirical studies of social, biological, technological and information networks. Exploring the concepts of small world effect, degree distribution, clustering, network correlations, node centrality, and community structure of networks. This will be followed by detailed case study of citation networks. Types of network: Social networks, Information networks, Technological networks, Biological networks, Citation Networks. Properties of network: Small world effect, transitivity and clustering, degree distribution, scale free networks, maximum degree; mixing patterns; degree correlations; community structures; node centrality.

Prof. Animesh Mukherjee

Presently, Animesh Mukherjee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Prior to this, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the same Department for the last four and a half years. Immediately before that he was a post doctoral researcher in the Complex Systems Lagrange Lab, ISI Foundation, Italy. He received his PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with a thesis on “self-organization of human speech sound inventories”. His main research interests center around applying complex system approaches (mainly complex networks and agent-based simulations) to different problems in (a) human language evolution and change,(b) web social media,(c) information retrieval, and (d) natural language processing He has received many notable awards including the INAE Young Engineer Award 2012, INSA Medal for Young Scientists 2014 and the IBM Faculty Award 2015. He has authored more than 60 articles in top-tier CS conferences and high impact journals.
