In some developed countries the GNP increased 126% from 1946 to 1988. During the same time population rose 43%. The amount of lead in the air increased 400%, and the NO3 and P in Lake Erie by 220%. Smog (smoke + dust) over large cities multiplied 10 fold. Pollution on the face of the figures was growing even more rapidly than people.
