Module 6 : PHYSICS OF SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES
Lecture 34 : Intrinsic Semiconductors
Example 7
  Estimate the electrical conductivity of intrinsic silicon at 300 K, given that the electron and hole mobilities are $ \mu_e = 0.15$ m $ ^2$/V-s and $ \mu_h= 0.05$ m $ ^2$/V-s.
  Solution
The conductivity arises due to both electrons and holes

$\displaystyle \sigma = qn_i(\mu_e+\mu_h)$
  The intrinsic carrier concentration $ n$ was calculated to be $ 1.2\times 10^{16}/ {\rm m}^3$ at 300 K. Thus

$\displaystyle \sigma = 1.6\times 10^{-19}\times 1.2\times 10^{16}\times 0.2 = 3.84\times 10^{-4}\ \ {\rm ohm - m}^{-1}$
