6.9 A Comparison

So far, we have learnt that there are four kinds of magnetism i.e. diamagnetism, paramagnetism, ferromagetism, and ferri- and antiferromagnetism. The field dependent magnetization behavior of these different types is shown below as well the dependence on temperature. Diamagnetism is a basic character present in every material, it is just that this behavior is overshadowed in materials where other effects are present too.

Figure 6.20: Comparison of magnetic behaviour (magnetization and susceptibility) of various kinds of magnetic materials versus temperature

Practically most important materials are ferromagnets, mostly metals, and ferrimagentic materials, mostly ferrite oxides which we will discuss in subsequent sections.
