Lecture 34: Asymmetric laminate with MS layer away from the mid plane

Effect of location of MS layer on sensing voltage

From the numerical analysis of previous case, it is clear that keeping the MS layer away from the mid plane is good for sensing as the curvature effect of beam comes into play and MS layer is stressed to a greater level leading to increase in the sensing voltage.

Figure 33.7: Open circuit voltage with the change in position of MS layer for unidirectional laminate.

Figure 33.7 displays the effect of location of MS layer on its sensing capability for a nine ply unidirectional laminate. It clearly depicts that as the MS layer is moved away from mid plane, a change in sensing voltage from 51mV to 69 mV is predicted.
