Main advantage of magnetostrictive sensing

The fundamental technology is non-contact in nature so that the sensors can last indefinitely and can be inserted/embedded inside the composite layers.

Disadvantage of MS materials

Need for delivery of a controlled magnetic field to an embedded actuator.

A typical magnetostrictive transducer is shown in Figure 12.3.
