In this lecture, I will provide you an overview of a group of material properties important
for the designer. You may be aware of many of them; however, for the sake of
completeness and to avoid ambiguities at a later state we are going to define the
relevant properties here.
The following properties are considered for this purpose:
- Relative Prices
- Mechanical Properties: Density, Modulus, Damping, Yield Strength,
Tensile Strength, Hardness, Fracture Toughness, Fatigue Strength,
Thermal Fatigue Resistance, Creep Strength
- Surface Properties: Oxidation, Corrosion, Friction, Abrasion & Wear

- Ease of Manufacture, Joining
- Aesthetic Properties: Appearance, Texture, Feel
