Material Property Index against Tensile Failure

The natural frequency of a string for length 'L' , mass 'M' and tension 'T' is given by the following relationship:

? = n/L v(T/ML)
Where, T= ?2 A L 2 ρ /n 2

Hence using area as the free variable:

T = ( ?2 /n2) T max L 2 ( ρ / σ f )

Which shows the material property index as ( ρ / σ f ).

The following are the natural frequency specification, which is often used as a qualitative guide-line

  • Nat. Freq. 2000 Hz - Warm Mellow
  • 3000 Hz - Brilliant bright
  • 4000 Hz - Piercing
  • 5000 Hz - Brittle & Thin
