How do we quantify the availability of materials?


The animated figure below shows clearly the reserve and resource relationship in terms of the
availability of the materials.


With the advent of technology, the reserve out-line for every material is continuously expanding except in some cases where the usage is declared as potentially hazardous. One of the examples of such mineral is Asbestos which has serious detrimental effects in the respiratory system and hence the use is quite restricted. Also, below taking data from Ashby [1] we have developed bar-charts which compare the relative cost commonly used materials.
