Lecture 1 : Introduction

	Objectives of the Course The objectives of the course are as follows : To develop the finite element formulation for a model one-dimensional problem like axially loaded bar for the case of simplest approximation (i.e., linear approximation). To discuss the possible refinements of the simplest approximation. To develop the frame work of a finite element code to solve the one- dimensional problem. To extend the finite element formulation to other one-dimensional problems like the beam problem. To develop the two-dimensional finite element formulation for a model 2-D problem like 2-D steady-state heat conduction problem.
