Module 3:The problem of social transformation
Lecture 6: Institutional Approach to Social Transformation

Institutional approach and value education

Institutional analysis feeds into value education. We cannot imagine a course on value education today which will not include a discussion on environmental problems. For example, Jeevan Vidaya, as a value education program, includes not only discussion on individual happiness, family integration, workplace interactions and society but it also includes discussion of adverse impact of lack of “right understanding” of environment. However, value education is closer to professional ethics rather than social interventions, conscientization or spreading revolutionary consciousness. Value education does not preclude the possibility that someone after attending a course on value education becomes an activist or a revolutionary, but it emphasizes more the ethics of everyday life than social action program. Value education course for students of science and engineering or management aims at making them better and more responsible professionals than activists.
