The choices on a six-point scale vary from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The choices are: Strongly Disagree (1) Moderately Disagree (2) Slightly Disagree (3) Slightly Agree (4) Moderately Agree (5) and Strongly Agree.

On the basis of respondent’s choices an overall score is obtained by adding all 29 choice scores and dividing this by 29; certain negative statements such as ‘I don't think that the world is a good place’ are reverse coded, i.e., for them the scores would be: Strongly Disagree (6) Moderately Disagree (5) Slightly Disagree (4) Slightly Agree (3) Moderately Agree (2) and Strongly Agree (1).

It is said that the score that the most unhappy person gets is a "1" and the score that the happiest person gets is a "6." The average person scores slightly over 4. (You may check your happiness score using the above survey).
