Weaknesses of JV

However, at the moment there are a few problems with JV.

  • It is conducted through Shivirs and discussion groups. It is either disseminated through formal courses in IITs, IIITs and other technical/management institutions or through informal discussion groups. It relies less on texts, groups of experts or professional. There are not many discussion leaders and there is not much to show case so that new people can be attracted. You join it mostly either because of formal requirement or because someone personally known to you draws your attention to it. In case of formal requirements humans normally have a tendency to protest. Why should engineers be interested in something which does not even enable to learn about history and culture? More students would be interested in society, history and culture than in something about which they have a very little idea. In case of informal requirements they would be attracted if they find that the person who introduces them to JV is different. He is happier, more charming, more successful, more peaceful, more of something they value (charismatic personality). The mere assertion of a fact that someone has developed more competence to deal with his relations etc. (a claim that is always made in the Shivirs) is not very attractive. It is difficult to demonstrate that the members of JV are more competent to handle social relations. Nature of relations, difficulties and innovative approaches are all interpretations and not verifiable facts.

  • Another weakness of JV is that although it promises to transform life it has produced few people who are really transformed. People want concrete results. That is why they follow leaders. Unless they are convinced that JV has produced some results in some domains they will not be attracted towards it. The results have to be in the form of organization output, organization health, trustworthy personality, establishment of work place spirituality etc. Experience shows that most of the followers of JV succumb to same institutional constrains in life as with other people. My experience is that they are not even encouraged to rebel. They accept all structures of institutions including the institution of marriage etc.
