Module 12: Human values and humanism: dilemmas and directions
Lecture 38: Value Education-III (Professional Ethics)

Box 38.2 shows the examples of unethical practices, widely prevalent in society. The examples are only illustrative. You can add many more to them. Gaur et al. (2010) attempt to identify the major institutional, legal and social initiatives that have been proposed so far to handle them. They also conclude that such initiatives have failed to work. Despite strict rules and procedures there is corruption. It appears that corruption is a general problem, a cultural problem. Both rich and poor are corrupt. Both urban and rural people are corruptible. Both educated and uneducated people are corruptible. Corruption is not confined to economic activities only. It has pervaded politics, education and even religion.

Box 38.2: Unethical Practices
  • Corruption in multiple forms and at various levels
  • Tax evasion, misappropriation and misuse of public funds
  • Misleading propaganda, unethical advertisements and sales promotion
  • Cut-throat competition
  • Exploiting the weakness of consumers through various enticements
  • Adulteration and spurious production
  • Endangering the health and safety of public at large
  • Hoarding and over-charging etc. … the list could be much longer.
