Module 12: Human values and humanism: dilemmas and directions
Lecture 38: Value Education-III (Professional Ethics)

Conclusion

In sum, the professional institutions have started recognizing the need for professional ethics. Several of them have introduced a value education course developed in the framework of Jeevan Vidya. It may have produced some results. Yet, the point is that for definition, redefinition and maintenance of professional ethics we cannot depend on “right understanding” on the part of individuals alone. We need an institutional approach as well. Thus we need:

  • A clear definition of professional norms – formal and informal.

  • A clear understanding of their relationship with universal morality.

  • Enough interaction in the form of informal gatherings, seminars, meetings and conferences to talk about professional ethics and to strengthen belief of all sections of the profession in them.

  • Ways of identifying any departure from them and institutionalized and transparent norms regarding handling deviations.

Appeals from professional leaders of high reputation can also help as people have a tendency to follow what the great leaders say.
