Module 11: Indian Social Thoughts
Lecture 32:Issues in Modernization in India – I (From Skepticism to Conversion)

Conclusion

The future of development and modernization is to be decided by state and private entrepreneurs. The state has the support of intelligentsia, civil society, and religious groups. Both the global and local forces are also going to promote development to higher and higher levels despite a realization that it will further aggravate various forms of social and ecological crisis. Crisis of value is one manifestation of this. Traditionalists claimed that Indian tradition promised solutions to the crisis part but they could not offer a viable and politically acceptable alternative to development. This means that tradition appears more as a healer rather than a cure to the ills of modernization. In this context, the next lecture is devoted to what are the options before India.
