Did India modernize?

There is no doubt that after independence India started modernizing. More precisely, the process of modernization started by the Englishmen got a further boost after independence of the country. This also produced a few good results. There has been a very noticeable improvement in education, morbidity and mortality, and the place of the country in the world politics. All commonly used indicators of development such as literacy rate, adult literacy, per capita income, life expectancy, infant mortality and child mortality rates, urbanization and energy use per capita have shown significant improvement during six decades of independence.
