Module 7: Political approaches
Lecture 22: The other Parties and their Contributions

Limits of political action

It appears that in a democratic society there is a limit to the contribution of political parties in promoting peace and harmony. In the recent past political power has often been limited by international organizations and agreements, civil society mobilizations, media and judicial activism. Media is considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy now. Judicial activism directed against political decisions is welcomed by people who have elected their political representatives, showing that the gap between political representatives and people is widening. There are occasions when the society is not ready to accept the future oriented, revolutionary goals fixed by the state. Such goals are difficult to achieve. Political action is also limited by religious, familial, financial, and cultural institutions. For social development in a real sense we need more of civil society groups and non-government organizations (NGOs) and community based organizations (CBOs). It is expected that in the future NGOs and CBOs will play an increasing role not only in implementing the government agenda but also in moral awakening and social transformation.
