Module 6: Economic and utilitarian theories
Lecture 15: Utility and Economic Theory

Conclusion

Utilitarianism made a powerful contribution to economics. It has produced both revolutionary and conservative tendencies. As a revolutionary thought it attacked the continuing gender and class inequalities; as conservative thought it shifted attention from class interest to individual behavior. In any case, it has raised questions about the concept of utility, measurements of utility, and happiness as the only true measure of happiness. Income was rejected as the sole criterion of happiness at both group and individual level.
