Module 5: Religious and spiritual approaches to human happiness
  Lecture12: Christianity, Islam and Sikhism

Maulana argues that in the age of globalization, in which all religions enjoy freedom to follow their laws and are permitted to preach their religion, “what had formerly been possible only in Darul Islam [the Abode of Islam], now became equally possible in Darual Harb [the Abode of War] or Darul Kufr [the Abode of Deniers].” To quote:

After the establishment of religious freedom on a global scale, the entire world has become one, and now only the phrase of Daurl Amn (the Abode of Peace) or Darul Insan (the Abode of Human Beings) may properly be applied to it.

Maulana believes the recent misinterpretation of Islam by certain Islamic scholars has arisen because of giving more importance to political history of Islam and a wrong belief that Muslims must politically conquer this world. For the benefit of Islam as well as for the peace and development of the world, Muslims should focus more on the religious laws of Islam rather that the political history. They should make peace with Israel and the Western world, take to science and technology education, and contribute to world development. By waging war against Israel, the Western world, and the Muslim rulers themselves in the Muslim countries they have harmed the growth of religious Islam and brought a bad name to Muslims.

A universally acknowledged principle of the modern age is that the homeland is the basis of nationhood. The homeland of a man or a woman therefore determines his or her nationality. Accordingly, religion is a matter of private and personal belief, while nationhood is a secular matter and all issues pertaining to nationhood are decided according to secular principles. Thus Muslims who cling to the notion that religion determines nationhood have become victims of a contradiction. Today, Muslims are living all over the world, but on account of their ideology, they are regarded with suspicion everywhere. It is generally believed that Muslims can be loyal only to a Muslim country, and that they cannot be loyal to a country where they are living as a religious minority.
