There are two beliefs about why Siddhartha Gautam renounced the world. According to one, he renounced the world because he found that without attaining liberation, as some monks had done, no one can escape old age, sickness, death, decay and sorrow. According to another, Gautam stood up against the decision of his community to fight the neighboring community on a water dispute. As per the tradition, if the leader (his father) contradicted the community decision he had to face sanctions from the community and the king. He argued that no problem could be solved through war and in order to maintain peace in the community. When the community did not agree with the idea he imposed self-exile on himself. He left the community.
