Social work and charity
Religion has undoubtedly played a significant role in social work. Many individuals and organizations have involved in social work and charity purely for religious reasons. Religious organizations have built dharamshalas, dug wells, constructed temples, opened schools and colleges, provided relief during natural disasters and helped the poor. Arya Samaj, Sanatan Dharma Sabhas, Sai Samitis and Ramkrishna Mission are running several schools, colleges and relief programs in various parts of India. These organizations also provide help during epidemics, floods and famines, and wars and internal conflicts. In this respect religious institutions have served the social cause more visibly than the political organizations or corporate organizations (under corporate social responsibility which is a new phenomenon).
Moral contribution
Religion is a great moral force. In conflict between self-interest and social interest religion calls for acting in the social interest. Hinduism preaches the importance of truth, non-stealing, non-violence, faithfulness towards spouse, respect for elders, honesty in public life, ethical conduct, love and compassion. The connection between religion and morality is perceived to be so great that many people think that fall in religiosity is the root causes of all kinds of social ills affecting the modern society. Restoration of religious values only will resurrect the perfect order.
