It could be said that in Enlightenment the sovereignty of reason was worshipped over biblical revelation. There were revolutionary changes in methods and knowledge of natural sciences that had rendered nature not only knowable through observation and experimentation but also made it sources of resources and power. Extending the logic of the Enlightenment it was argued that just as nature was regulated by laws, human society could also be reduced to predictable rule-bound laws. The state, society and economy, from this perspective were rule-governed and therefore amenable to social engineering.
