As discussed in the previous lecture, the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution can be summarized in the following way:

  • The Industrial Revolution overturned not only traditional economies but also whole societies.

  • The separation between home and work place was complete.

  • It deskilled the worker and therefore lower the wages.

  • It led to the rise of free market and capitalism and mass consumption. The shift in work context had important implications for leisure. The middle class leisure taste was geared towards personal improvement and family cohesion.

  • The Industrial Revolution spread to other countries of Europe and America in the 19th century. It should be remembered that the Industrial Revolution was not an event with a beginning and an end.

  • It is the marvel of rising productivity was the central economic achievement that made the Industrial Revolution such a milestone in human history.
