Neighbourhood is also a political community and there could be a:
- Informal self-government
- Municipality ward
- Building block for voting, political parties and representation
Neighbourhood has been the target of many policy programmes whose goal has been to improve social cohesion within a society. In the west they are known as ‘urban renewal’ programmes. The assumption is that neighbourhood offers more than a spatial context for daily life. It also offers an instrument for political strategies that strives to achieve social cohesion, social capital and the integration of various residential groups. It is also sometimes a unit of political action in the form of mohalla committees.3
3For example, the post-Babri Masjid riots in Mumbai had led to the formation of mohalla committees. At the time of the riot, the absence of any institution between the state and community was intensely felt. Mohalla committee was an initiative that involved the police and the general public though it has very often been an uneasy relationship. |
