There are, in fact, completely gemeinschaft communities in the heart of the city such as the ghetto (west) or the pols of Ahmedabad. They are like urban villages and these are the spaces that have prompted many scholars to argue that rural/urban is a false dichotomy in India. Even in the west we saw that neighbourhoods exist in the suburbs and depending on their needs people migrated between the inner-city and the suburb. Suburban neighbourhoods very often offer a monotonous lifestyle but they are considered to be a good place for family life and for raising kids.2
| 2Discuss the popular serial Friends. In the story, some of the characters who had grown up in the suburbs of New York city chose to live in the inner-city when they were single but decided to move back to the suburbs when they had kids. The Walt Disney film Finding Nemo begins with a sequence where a fish couple whose eggs are about to hatch are shown to be happy with the good neighbourhood that they have chosen for their babies when they arrive. Their world turns topsy-turvy when a voracious shark arrives on the spot and eats up all the eggs. In the end, it was not a safe neighbourhood! |
