The conduit systems suffered from a different set of costly problems. Conduit systems cost much more to build than overhead systems because they required major excavation of the street and hence higher first cost.
It also had to have an excellent drainage system to keep the water off the bare wires and the conduits also tended to accumulate dirt and mud and interfered with its operation.
Overhead wires provided must easier access for maintenance in case of broken wires.
