The second example we take that of street lighting
What did lighting mean for the cities when adequate lighting technology was invented? The author explores the varieties of urban experiences and recognizes three important ideas:
- Social Control
- Luxury and consumption
- Utility
- In the middle ages, by and large, night was left unexplored. Lights were meant to be only utilities and only those with means could afford them.
- Cites such as Alexandria and Antioch had records of merry-making and public oil lamps in the 4th century A.D.
