What is Health Psychology?

Well what is Health?

Health is a term that has been hard to define. Is it the absence of illness- an infection or a chronic condition?

If a person is confined to living in a certain space without any mental stimulation or hope would such a person be considered healthy?

People living in a war zone under daily threat would they be considered healthy?

People persecuted for their religious beliefs and insulted on a daily basis – are they healthy?

The poor who have to face many humiliations, as well deal with frustration (unable to meet their basic necessities as well as goals) would they be considered healthy?

Thus people compromised in ways other than the physical may also be in acute distress. The word health derives from anglo saxon words meaning ‘whole’ ‘hale’ ‘holy’.  In traditional systems of medicine health is conceptualized as a state of balance or harmony with nature (Marks, Murray, Evans, Willig, Woodall & Sykes, 2005). Both Ayurveda and the traditional Greek system emphasize balance of physiological elements as well as behavior.
