Module 15 : Sustainable Design
Lecture 39 : Introduction, What is Sustainable Design?, Sustainable Greenhouse Design, Sustainable design principles
  Introduction

The relevance of Sustainable Design is becoming louder day by day. Globally it is realized that sustainable design can play positive role towards saving the earth resources and create better living conditions. Sustainable Design has become a household issue. Industrial Designers are facing a new challenge and scope of enlarging their horizon with added values. Consumer products have become integral part of every society around the world. Everybody wants inexpensive, durable and quality product for comfortable and safe lifestyle. Sustainable Design does not mean people want less. On the contrary people have increasing purchasing power, they want more. Therefore, the challenge remains with designing ecofriendly product design for the mass.

Therefore, using ecologically sound material and lesser consumption of earth resource may lead to create greener and healthy environment. For example, usage of traditional natural material such as drift-wood can create innovative furniture design (plate 1A) while saving other resources (metal, plastic, etc.). Using innovative arm-chair design (plate 1B) built with hand-knitted twisted yarn avoids the use of machine yet looking elegant. Recycled corks from the wine bottles (plate 1C- 2A) can provide excellent floor design with waterproof surface. Thus, used rejected material can be of great source of innovative sustainable design.
