Module 7 : Bigger & Smaller
Lecture 21 : Hydration and dehydration, Spring Paradigm

The manifestation of spring we experience in varieties of ways in our life. Man-made mechanical springs to nature’s spring like things are surrounding us. Spring Paradigm is closely related to Swelling and Squashing Paradigm and Expanding and Contracting. Coil is compressed like sponge and expands when the pressure is released. Spring mechanism is an important component in the design process while planning for a product design.  Coil stores mechanical energy which can be used by releasing it at a desirable state. Because of the storing capacity of the energy it resists to another force upon it. Based on the same principles spring is being popularly used as shock absorber. ‘Bow & Arrow’ functions in the same principle like spring. Man invented bow and arrow for their survival (food and defence). From the ancient time man realized the spring paradigm from nature and applied to invent bow and arrow. Swinging branches (plate 17A&B) having spring like quality which are being used by apes for their movements above ground. Swinging branch (plate 17C) create bridge between two members for the support. Swinging in the trees (plate 17D) is a common play place for every child. Thus, in each case the spring paradigm has helped or inspired to invent new application.
