Bending and flexing (plate 1A-D) are essential aspects related various movements of living beings. Design has adopted various forms of bending and flexing paradigm. Concepts of any design have to consider bending and flexing ability of the material. Each material or living being has the point of limitation in term of bending or flexing. Once it crosses its point of limitation it may snap the elasticity of the material.

Many things change shape (plate 2A&B) when we use them. When we use our hands or when we walk for instance, our joints flex and bend, and living beings change shape continually. The capability to change shape is essential for creatures or devices with rigid skeletons or exoskeletons (nails, bones) for their movement (plate 2C). Due to such quality of flexibility, the same body part can perform various works. Our ability to walk, to sit, to write, to hold, to grip, to turn, to hug, etc.- almost every physical activities imaginable involves bending and flexing of our joints. In nature trees or saplings bend due to various natural conditions for their survival. To stand against the strong wind or to grow out of the shade the trees have to bend and take suitable position for their survival. Therefore, replicating bending or flexing is important aspects in design of many objects that we have observed in nature. The nature of the material would dictate the limit and the possibility of bending.
